Sri Lanka's Most Sheltered Beach Bay
Unawatuna has one thing most south coast beaches can't offer: genuinely calm water. A natural reef running across the mouth of the bay breaks the Indian Ocean swell before it reaches shore, leaving the water inside clear, relatively flat, and safe to swim in even when conditions elsewhere are choppy. The beach itself is a compact crescent of white sand, lined with shady palms and backed by a row of casual beach restaurants β the kind of places where you can order a rice and curry, order it again, and spend four hours doing nothing in particular.
What's Actually in the Water
The reef that protects the bay is also worth getting into. Snorkelling here regularly turns up hawksbill and green sea turtles β the reef is part of their feeding ground, and sightings are common enough that they shouldn't feel like a lucky bonus. Snorkel gear is available for hire from several spots along the beach for approximately $5β8 per session.
For divers, a sunken shipwreck sits close to shore in shallow water, making it an accessible site for beginners and an interesting one for more experienced divers. Several dive operators based in Unawatuna run guided wreck dives, with trips starting from around $30 as of 2025.
The Rumassala Headland
At the eastern end of the bay, the Rumassala headland rises steeply β a dense, largely undisturbed patch of jungle that cuts off the bay and gives it much of its sheltered character. Trails run up through the trees, and the elevated position offers a decent view back across the full arc of the beach.
Practical Travel Notes
December to April is peak season, and the beach fills up quickly β sun loungers get claimed early and the restaurants get busy by midday. Mirissa, about 30km further east along the coast, is a good alternative if you want something quieter, though Unawatuna's reef-protected water is hard to match anywhere nearby.
